English Abstract
The Middle Triassic lower Jilh Formation in central Saudi Arabia records the deposition of a paralic to fluvial setting along the passive northeastern margin of the Arabian Plate during the early stages of the Neo-Tethys opening. Despite its critical role as a complete petroleum system, detailed studies of its marginal siliciclastic outcrop facies remain scarce, while its carbonate- and evaporite-rich subsurface equivalents are well analyzed. This study presents the first integrated sedimentological, ichnological, and geochemical analysis of a well exposed, 44-metre outcrop from central Saudi Arabia. Six main lithofacies were identified and grouped into two lithofacies associations that document a vertical transition from a low‑energy, brackish paralic system to a fluvial depositional system. The lower lithofacies association is characterized by fine grained sediments, low intensity and low diversity trace fossil assemblages that are indicative of stressed conditions. The upper lithofacies association comprises bioturbated floodplain sandstones and cross bedded channel fill deposits, reflecting increased depositional energy, vegetation influence, and continental sediment input. Geochemical data support this transition by documenting systematic changes in climatic conditions, terrigenous input, and salinity conditions throughout the succession. These combined datasets suggest a regressive trend driven primarily by climate-forced increases in continental runoff. The results refine the depositional model of the Middle Triassic Jilh Formation and provide new insights into the paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic evolution of the Arabian Plate during the Triassic.
