Arabic Abstract

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى معالجة الحاجة المتزايدة لتحويل تقييم الساحات العامة في المدن السعودية من منظور كمي بحت إلى تقييم شامل لجودة التصميم. فعلى الرغم من تركيز المبادرات الوطنية على زيادة نصيب الفرد من هذه الفراغات، إلا أن الجوانب النوعية التي تؤثر على تجربة المستخدم ورضاه وكفاءة استخدام هذه المساحات لم تحظَ بالاهتمام الكافي. ومن هذا المنطلق، تسعى الدراسة إلى تحليل أدوات تقييم الفراغات العامة القائمة، والكشف عن أوجه القصور المنهجية والمفاهيمية فيها، وتطوير إطار تقييمي منظم يتلاءم مع السياق المحلي في المملكة العربية السعودية. تعتمد الدراسة على منهجية بحثية تجمع بين الأساليب الكمية والنوعية. حيث تم أولاً تحليل أدوات التقييم الحالية باستخدام إطار سيميائي لدراسة التباين عبر المستويات التجريبية والتركيبية والدلالية والبراغماتية. تلا ذلك استخراج وتجميع المؤشرات من الأدبيات العلمية، مما أسفر عن بناء نموذج مفاهيمي منظم يتكون من خمسة أبعاد رئيسية: الجودة المادية والفراغية، الجودة البيئية، القيمة الاجتماعية والثقافية، الجوانب الوظيفية وقابلية الاستخدام، والجودة الجمالية والتجريبية. بعد ذلك، تم تطوير أداة قياس وتحقق من صحتها إحصائياً من خلال استبيان شمل (202) مشاركاً، باستخدام اختبارات الثبات، ومؤشر الأهمية النسبية، وتحليل الإجماع، بالإضافة إلى التحليل العاملي الاستكشافي. أظهرت النتائج وجود تباين ملحوظ في الأدوات الحالية، كما أكدت الطبيعة متعددة الأبعاد لجودة الفراغات العامة. وقد أثبت الإطار المطور مستوى عالياً من الثبات والصدق، مما يجعله أداة فعالة وملائمة لتقييم جودة الفراغات العامة في المدن السعودية. وتُسهم هذه الدراسة في إثراء المعرفة النظرية والتطبيقية من خلال تقديم منهجية متكاملة قائمة على الأدلة، تدعم اتخاذ قرارات تصميمية وتخطيطية أكثر كفاءة واستدامة.

English Abstract

This study addresses the growing need to shift the evaluation of public open spaces (POS) in Saudi cities from a predominantly quantitative perspective toward a comprehensive assessment of design quality. While national initiatives have prioritized increasing the provision of open spaces, limited attention has been given to the qualitative attributes that influence user experience, satisfaction, and overall effectiveness. In response, this research aims to examine existing POS assessment tools, identify their methodological and conceptual limitations, and develop a structured, context-sensitive tool for evaluating POS quality in Saudi Arabia. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach. First, a systematic analysis of existing assessment tools was conducted using a semiotic framework to examine divergence across empiric, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic levels. This was followed by the extraction and consolidation of indicators from the literature, resulting in a structured conceptual model comprising five primary dimensions: physical and spatial quality, environmental quality, social and cultural value, functional and usability aspects, and aesthetic and experiential quality. An assessment instrument was then developed and empirically validated through a questionnaire survey (n = 202), with statistical analyses including reliability testing, consensus analysis based on interquartile range and median values, and exploratory factor analysis. The findings reveal significant inconsistencies in existing tools and highlight the multidimensional nature of POS quality. The developed tool demonstrates strong reliability and validity, offering a robust and contextually relevant instrument for assessing public open spaces. This research contributes both theoretically and practically by advancing a comprehensive, empirically grounded approach to POS quality assessment, supporting more informed urban design and planning decisions in Saudi cities.
