English Abstract

With the production of high-performance and miniaturized electronic devices in recent years, electronic components produce a significant amount of heat, which can result in a reduction in work performance and working life. Therefore, thermal management has become a significant factor in the design and production of electronic components. In this research, the influence of a phase change material (PCM) based finned heat sink is carried out experimentally and numerically in order to investigate the performance of heat transfer to passively cool electronic devices. Two-phase change materials named PEG-6000 and PT 58 were used in this research. Experimentally, these PCMs embedded in an un-finned heat sink to test the base temperature of the heat sink. The purpose of conducting this experiment is to validate the numerical model that has been used in this research. A twodimensional (2D) transient investigation was conducted to study the effect of embedding PCMs into finned heat sink on the thermal performance to passively cool portable electronic devices with the conjunction of experimental analysis to obtain the thermophysical properties of the PCM. The heat removal from the portable electronics can be controlled by embedding these PCMs. The thermal conductivity is improved by designing the heat sink with a 9% thermal conductivity enhancer (TCE) of metallic fins. Two fin thicknesses (2 and 3 mm) are used in this study to show the effect of changing thexvii fin thickness under different heat rates. Conjugate heat transmission and melting/solidification phenomenon are explored by applying different levels of power using finite-volume-method transient numerical simulations. This model is validated with literature data and with the experimental data conducted in this research. According to the findings, under a 5W constant heat rate, there is an optimum reduction of 23.8% in the maximum base temperature when a 3mmthick-finned heat sink is employed with PT 58. Also, the maximum enhancement to the melting time is found to be in the PT 58 of around 40.18% by changing the fin thickness from 2 to 3 mm at 5W. Moreover, the time needed to melt the PCMs is decreased by increasing the power rate from 5 to 8 W. Finally, the 3mm-thick finned-Heat sink with PT 58 exhibited the superior heat transfer performance, which enabled it to maintain a temperature of the base of heat sink, improve its cooling capacity, and reduce its maximum operating temperature
