English Abstract

Nano-scale ferrites is emerging as promising material in nanomaterial research particularly in the fields of electromagnetism, electronics, medical and healthcare, optics, photocatalysis, aerospace, defense, and environmental sciences. Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) is extensively studied due to appealing electro-magnetic properties, high chemical and thermal stability, facile synthesis, and large variety of advanced technological applications. Graphene and its hybrid material have impressive mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. As well as having extraordinarily increased specific surface area, thermal and mechanical stability, and low density. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) /cobalt ferrite composite are prepared via polyol co-precipitation method using two different routes, i.e., conventional heating and microwave heating. Cobalt nitrate (Co(NO3)2·6H2O) and ferric chloride FeCl3 were used as starting materials and mixed with pre-determined amount of graphene content. Diethylene glycol acted as high boiling point solvent as well as a reducing agent. The prepared samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Samples showed high level of crystallinity with microwave heated samples showing smaller crystalline size and increased purity. Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) characterization showed tunable magnetic properties by changing the graphene content and synthesis method.
