English Abstract

Prompt gamma elemental analysis of sulfur-contaminated soil samples and composite samples such as Trisodium phosphate (Na3PO4.12H2O), Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), and Sodium chloride (NaCl) soil samples were carried out in this research. Phosphorous, Sodium, and Sulphur concentrations in soil mixed with Na3PO4.12H2O, MgSO4, and NaCl samples with 1.4 - 4.49 wt% P, 3.1 - 12.46 wt.% Na and 2.5 - 13.5 wt. % S were analyzed in neutron activation with 2.5 MeV neutron dc beams using 76 mm x 76 mm (diameter x height) BGO and CeBr3 detectors. Also, a sample containing Sulphur mixed with soil was analyzed for sulfur using a BGO detector. The study was undertaken at the KFUPM Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis setup using a newly acquired Sodern Genie-16 deuterium-deuterium neutron generator. For elemental analysis in soil samples, the Minimum Detectable Concentration (MDC) of Phosphorus (P), Sulfur (S), and Sodium (Na) in soil samples were measured and compared with earlier reported values. The (MDCσ_MDC) of P in Trisodium phosphate soil sample has been measured to be 0.37 ± 0.11 wt% and 0.55 ± 0.17 wt% using BGO and CeBr3 gamma ray detectors, respectively. The (MDCσ_MDC) of S in pure sulfur mixed with soil samples and for magnesium sulfate soil samples were also measured to be 0.68 ± 0.21 wt% and 0.56 ± 0.17 wt%, respectively, using the BGO detector. The (MDCσ_MDC) of Na in Trisodium phosphate soil samples was measured to be 0.31 ± 0.09 wt% and 0.79 ± 0.24 wt% using the BGO and CeBr3 gamma ray detectors, respectively. The (MDCσ_MDC) of Na in sodium chloride soil samples was measured to be 0.35 ± 0.11 wt% and 0.73 ± 0.22 wt% using the BGO and CeBr3 gamma ray detectors, respectively.
