English Abstract

Removal of Pb2+ from supply water using an inexpensive adsorbent is important. It is recommended that low-cost adsorbents are developed to effectively remove Pb2+ from aqueous solution. The recent research on the developments in Pb2+ removal technologies using the low-cost adsorbents were reviewed and the research gaps were identified. The aim of the research is to develop the highly porous activated carbon-based adsorbent using the low-cost materials, and develop and validate models for predicting the performance of the adsorbent. The jute stick, a low-cost agricultural byproduct, was used to develop the activated carbon, which was functionalized to produce the carboxylated jute stick derived activated carbon (JSAC-COO−). The JSAC-COO− was evaluated and compared with the other available adsorbents through the physical and chemical characteristics, and Pb2+ removal performance analysis. Controlled laboratory experiments were conducted following statistical “Design of Experiments” through varying the factors affecting the performance of JSAC-COO− in removing Pb2+. The performance of JSAC-COO− was investigated for different concentrations of Pb2+ (range: 10 - 500 mg/L) at variable experimental conditions (temperature: 15°C and 27°C; pH: 4.0 and 7.0) and time (1, 10, 30 and 60 min). Several models (Linear and non-linear) were investigated and validated for predicting the concentrations of Pb2+ in aqueous solution. The prepared JSAC-COO− had a surface area of 615.3 m2/g. The maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was 2079 mg/g. In 60 min, up to 99.8% removal of Pb2+ was achieved. Few models showed very good to excellent predictive capabilities with coefficients of determination in the range of 0.85–0.95. The model validation experiments showed the correlation coefficients in the range of 0.84 – 0.98. The produced adsorbent and the developed models were also compared with the carbon nanotube (CNT) based adsorbent, which was produced through extended experiments in this study. The performance of JSAC-COO− was better than the CNT-based adsorbent while JSAC-COO− is likely to be less costly. The developed JSAC-COO− is likely to be low-cost and an effective adsorbent, which can be further investigated for commercial applications through future research.
