English Abstract

Our life has been revolutionized by the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Looking back 20 years ago, AI has dominated the electronics industry since then. Yet, AI algorithms usually require heavy computational power, limiting their implementation on the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Many IoT devices operate on limited power supplies, making power consumption more critical. Hence, relaxing the power constraints for AI applications is essential. Also, data generation is another bottleneck in the electronics field, as modern devices are unable to cope with the exponential growth in the amount of generated data. In pursuit of alleviating this bottleneck, significant advancements have been made in data acquisition approaches to minimize the amount of redundant data acquired. The objective of this thesis is to present an intelligent data-acquisition approach that limits data acquisition to data of interest through an autonomous response to incoming sensor data, so that the system constraints on memory and power are reduced. The proposal was proven by simulations and experiments on real application data. The proposed approach ensures seamless integration with conventional data acquisition systems with introducing minimal design complexity to the system. The primary contribution of this thesis is to introduce the concept of probabilistic sensing based on a novel emerging electronic device called the magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), and these MTJs are utilized to realize probabilistic bits (p-bits). Qualitatively and quantitatively, the probabilistic sensing advantage was proven to be evident, in addition to its distinct feature of tuning between conventional and autonomous data acquisition schemes. Another interesting outcome of this thesis is that the tunability of p-bits is increased, which opens up many possibilities for applications beyond sensing.
