English Abstract

Cranes are among the most widely used systems in the industry around the world. Due to their crucial role in many different fields, it was essential to study them to improve their efficiency and performance and facilitate the control of transporting loads. And due to the difficulty of dismantling and reinstalling the cranes and the difficulty of obtaining the exact values of the system parameters, it was essential to introduce control methods that adapt to changes in the system and can control it efficiently and with minimal requirements. This thesis studies the modeling and control of underactuated three dimensional overhead crane system. It consists of five chapters. First chapter is an overview of recent developments in the modeling and control of three-dimensional overhead crane systems. It provides a categorized survey of the published work. Different control methodologies when applied to overhead crane are examined, outlined and assessed to aid for future work. Second chapter studies the modeling of the system. first, the nonlinear model of the system is derived then, the linearized continuous- and discrete-time models are derived assuming fixed rope length and small swing angles. Third chapter proposes an adaptive sliding-mode control with online particle swarm optimization (PSO). The control scheme is applied on the system to make the crane follow a desired trajectory despite the uncertainty in its model. The online PSO is mainly used to estimate the uncertain parameters, then, update the model and the sliding-mode controller. Fourth chapter studies a model-free policy iteration control scheme. First, a Kalman filter estimator is derived in order to attenuate the system and measurement noises. Then, an online policy iteration-based reinforcement learning controller is used to control the system utilizing the estimation of its states. Since the algorithm is model-free, it doesn’t require a precise knowledge of the system dynamics. In each proposed control strategy, A simulation study is established to illustrate the influence and robustness of the developed controller and to show that it can enhance the trajectory tracking under different scenarios. Fifth chapter concludes the results of this thesis and discusses the future work.
