English Abstract

The exhaustion of petroleum resources and global warming phenomenon are nudging the world towards adopting renewable energy. Generally, solar energy is efficient, reliable, and environmentally-friendly alternative to fossil fuels. Recent advancements in solar photovoltaic technology made it an attractive choice for both energy harvesting and research. However, its performance is limited by high PV module temperature under harsh hot climate conditions. The power output of silicon-based PV systems decreases rapidly as the PV module temperature increases due to the poor heat dissipation of PV modules. In this study, mathematical and experimental studies were performed to propose an improved design of Al-can heat sink with a reasonable thermal performance to cool the PV modules. The design of the heat sink used in the first experiment was primitive (semi- circular-shaped heat sink), which was improved later to enhance its thermal performance. The improved design of Al-can heat sink is developed to compare its thermal performance experimentally with several passive heat sinks concurrently at commercial PV module. The preliminary experiment with limited attached heat sink width (15 mm) and attached length of 90 mm resulted in a local temperature reduction at the contact area and marginal temperature reduction in the surrounding area, leading to a non-uniform temperature distribution on PV module surface. Relative to the reference PV module (75.9 ºC), an average temperature reduction of 8.2 °C was achieved numerically with a single-layer heat sink of minimum attached width: 15 mm, attached length: 90 mm, and vertical fins’ height: 96.18 mm. At maximum solar irradiation of 1000 W/m2, the average temperature of the PV module with “Al-can” heat sinks of the different (attached width, fins height) of (15 mm, 96.18 mm), (65 mm, 71.18 mm), (115 mm, 46.18 mm) and (125 mm, 41.18 mm) are 67.7 ºC, 61.2 ºC, 56.3 ºC, and 55.7 ºC, respectively, and the average temperature the reference PV module was 75.9 ºC. This indicates that the attached width is having a direct relation with the thermal performance of the Al-can heat sink along the width of the PV cell (125 mm). The improved Al-can heat sink was chosen to have an attached length of 90 mm, a maximum width of 115 mm, and a fin height of 46.18 mm. The improved dimensions were chosen to compromise between thermal performance and installation complexity without disrupting the temperature profile's uniformity, yielding a marginal increase in the PV module’s temperature (0.6 °C) relative to the maximum attached width of 125 mm. The numerically improved Al-can heat sink (attached length: 90 mm, attached width:115 mm, and fin height: 46.18 mm) decreased the temperature and improved the temperature profile of PV module. Average PV module’s temperature reduction of 19.6 °C was achieved at maximum solar irradiation of 1000 W/m2. Even though the improved single-layer heat sink decreased the average PV module temperature to 56.3 °C at maximum solar irradiation of 1000 W/m2, the PV module’s temperature is still far from the operating temperature of the PV module. Further enhancement using multi-layers configuration was performed to improve the thermal performance of the Al-can heat sink. Numerical results revealed that four-layers heat sink with vertical fins spacing of 10 mm decreased the average PV module temperature to 46.9 °C versus 75.9 ºC for reference PV module at maximum solar irradiation of 1000 W/m2. The single-layer and 4-layers Al-can heat sinks were tested empirically on a commercial PV module and proven competitive with the tested commercial heat sinks. The 4-layers Al-can heat sink lowered the average temperature of the PV cell along the day to 5.93 °C (ranking 1st relative to the other tested heat sinks) and 5.21 °C (ranking 3rd relative to the other tested heat sinks) during the comparative experiments.
