English Abstract

The out-of-plane frequencies for the free vibration of a rotating tapered Timoshenko beam are investigated. The beam being linearly tapered in two planes is discretized using Fourier-p superelement approach with a few degrees of freedom (DOFs) for describing the beam displacements. Displacement functions of the beam are expressed in terms of quintic polynomials and trigonometric functions combined as shape functions. The governing differential equations for free vibrations of the rotating tapered beam are obtained using Lagrange’s equations. The generalized eigenvalue problem is defined, and numerical solutions are obtained for a wide range of hub radii, rotational speeds, taper ratios, slenderness ratios and setting angle. The first six non-dimensional natural frequencies are obtained for both fixed-free (cantilever) and hinged-free end conditions. Comparison is made wherever possible with available results in literature. With a few trigonometric sine terms, the Fourier-p superelement discretization method seems to produce more accurate beam frequencies compared to other conventional finite element methods.
