English Abstract

Scarcity of drinking water is predictable to be the biggest problem of the world due to the increase of industrial activities and population growth. In addition, impurity of water resources by industrial wastes has magnified the problem. In order to solve water scarcity problem, different desalination technologies are employed. Membrane distillation (MD) is one of the promising technologies that is used for water desalination and water treatment applications. In the MD process the slat separation takes place by heating the seawater to a certain temperature (between 40 to 90oC) with the help of hydrophobic membrane which allows the water vapor to pass but not the water. The driving force in the MD process is the difference in the vapor pressure associated with the temperature difference between the feed and coolant streams. In the proposed work, a detailed theoretical model of membrane distillation (MD) process in water gap module is presented for both single and multistage systems. The model is used to predict the system productivity through the analysis of the coupled heat and mass transfer and steady-state energy balance through membrane and module layers. For accurate prediction of productivity and energy performance, natural convection inside the water gap is studied. Effects of membrane support is included in the model to account for different areas of heat and mass transfers. In addition, all the design and operating conditions that may affect the performance of the system are theoretically optimized using differential evolution (DE) optimization method. Moreover, the model of the multistage water gap MD process is coupled with an evacuated tube solar collector to evaluate the dynamic operation of the integrated system. Based on the theoretical models, a new compact multistage MD system is designed, fabricated and tested with air and water gap configurations. Finally, the compact multistage system is integrated with a solar collector which is utilized to heat up the feed seawater and reduce the energy consumed for heating process. The results of the theoretical model reveal that considering the natural convection inside the water gap is critical, except for gap widths less than 1 mm, where one can assume pure conduction inside the gap. The new correlation provided very good match to experimental results for the water gap module under study. In addition, about 60% increase in the value of the highest permeate flux is obtained from the optimization model compared with the theoretical model of the single stage water gap MD process without applying the optimization, while the lowest values of both energy consumption and production cost are reduced by about 31% and 38%, respectively, when the optimization is applied. For the multi-objective optimization, the optimized permeate flux is 51% higher than the maximum flux obtained from the MD model without optimization, and the optimized value of specific energy consumption as low as 876 kWh/m3. For the multistage water gap MD model, it is found that under the conditions of 20oC coolant temperature, 50-90oC feed temperature, 2.3 L/min feed and coolant flow rates, 4 mm gap thickness; the maximum number of stages that can be connected in series is 35 stages before the productivity drops to almost zero. In this case, the total system productivity is about 5.2 L/h. It is also found that by insulating pipe connections and the MD module, the total productivity increases by 36%. The optimum number of stages that gives the minimum production cost is 15 stages, and the corresponding cost of freshwater production of the insulated multistage system is about 3 $/m3. By integrating the multistage water gap MD unit with the solar system, the minimum freshwater production cost for 15 stages is reduced by about 34%. The results of the experimental part indicate that the water gap process produces more freshwater than the air gap under the same operating conditions. However, the air gap system is the better in terms of energy consumption with higher gained output ratio.
