English Abstract

Anomalous behavior is observed in many physical processes which often hinders the successful use of integer order models for modeling such phenomena. On the other hand, fractional order models have been effectively used to describe and simulate these unusual behaviors in many physical systems. These models account for long-range interactions (fractional in space) and history effects (fractional in time) which are intrinsic characteristics of non-ideal materials exhibiting anomalous phenomena. In general, analytical solutions for fractional models are either unavailable or tedious to obtain. Therefore, efficient numerical treatment of such models is in continuous demand. Consequently, variety of numerical methods have been developed for these models. In this dissertation, we develop robust first, second, and third-order accurate (in the temporal variable) generalized exponential time differencing schemes (GETD) for time-space fractional diffusion and time-space fractional reaction-diffusion problems. Spatial-discretization of diffusion and reaction-diffusion problems often result in stiff systems of differential equations. We demonstrate that the GETD time-stepping schemes developed in this thesis have elegant stability properties to handle stiff problems without instability issues. To establish the convergence results, for the time-space fractional diffusion problem (linear problem), regularity requirements in the temporal variable are imposed on the source term rather than the solution. For the nonsmooth source terms, we employ the graded to achieve optimal convergence results. However, for the smooth source terms, it suffices to consider anytime mesh. On the other hand, for the time-space fractional reaction diffusion equation (nonlinear problem), it is known that the reularity of the solution affects the regularity of the source term. Consequently, we impose regularity conditions on both the source term and solution. To prove the convergence results, we again employ the graded mesh in order to compensate for the weak singularity of the exact solution. For efficient implementation of the schemes, highly accurate global Pad\'e approximations together with their partial fraction decomposition are developed for Mittag-Leffler functions. Demonstrations of the efficiency of the rational approximation implementation technique and the newly constructed high-order schemes are provided. The theoretical results endorse the findings of our numerical experiments.
