English Abstract

In this thesis, we propose a novel blind ranking method for contrast-enhanced images. A Graph-Based Visual Saliency (GBVS) algorithm is used to highlight the most salient patches in a given image. The proposed technique extracts features from attractive visual areas in the image. In the literature, most of the methods proposed rely on traditional features that are dedicated to evaluate distortion. However, such features cannot be used for ranking enhanced images and representing enhancement manipulations. Therefore, our proposed technique extracts features that best describe the effects of enhancement. The features set includes a pool of contrast metrics which focus on evaluating the contrast level of a given image/patch. These metrics are: AME, AMEE, DE, EC, EME, EMEE, RME, and RMSC. These metrics measure the contrast level without the need for a reference image (blind scenario). We also complemented these features with statistical measures such as skewness and kurtosis which reflect the degree of comfort related to human perception. The extracted features are then used with a classification framework to obtain the ranking among a set of enhancement images. The support vector machine is a powerful classifier compared to other classifiers such as the tree-classifier, among others. Using the developed features with support vector machine showed a significant improvement compared to traditional features. The results show that the proposed workflow outperforms most existing techniques used for quantifying the quality of contrast enhancement. The framework of the proposed technique, and details of various building blocks, are discussed in details in the upcoming sections.
