English Abstract

Goal-oriented requirements modeling frameworks are emerged to elicit, analyze, and document early stage, high-level requirements of software systems. The quality of these models influences the subsequent stages of software development. To improve the quality of these models, manual reviews are usually performed. However, manual reviews are expensive, have long feedback loops, and result in inconsistent feedback. In this work, the notion of bad smells (i.e., bad quality symptoms) is used as a vehicle to help improve the quality of GRL goal models by pinpointing quality improvement opportunities. To this end, a framework is developed to identify and articulate GRL bad smells. As a result, a catalog of GRL bad smells and a new GRL metrics suite are proposed. To evaluate the identification of the proposed bad smells and to derive metrics thresholds, a questionnaire is developed to survey experts’ opinions. The results show that out of the 12 potential bad smells sent to the experts, 11 were identified as bad smells, by the majority of the respondents. To detect the instances of the identified bad smells, three techniques are used (i.e., search-based, rule-based, and metrics-based). These techniques are implemented and deployed as a new tool and evaluated using several GRL case studies. The results of the evaluation of the proposed bad smells detection techniques show that the developed techniques and tool performed accurately as designed. In conclusion, the developed techniques and tool can effectively help identify quality improvement opportunities as instances of the proposed bad smells.
