English Abstract

Pollution of water resources from the high concentration of organic and inorganic compounds makes the available water unsuitable for use by the populace and industry. Therefore, efficient pre-treatment and purification strategies must be employed to simultaneously address many pollutants in water resources. Over the years, the advancement in nanoscience and polymer science has better-positioned adsorption and membrane technology as a formidable remediation approach. In this work, we synthesized a polymer-assisted metallic nanoadsorbent and evaluated its adsorption capacity for the removal of sulfate ions from model contaminated water. Also, a novel polymer-supported graphene-based composite membrane was synthesized, and its permeability and contaminants separation performance over time were investigated. The surface structural morphology, surface roughness, chemical, elemental, and mineral constituents, as well as functional group interaction of the synthesized polymer-supported nanoadsorbent and nanocomposite membrane were ascertained with Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray dispersive (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR). xv Thereafter, the batch adsorption experiments were carried out to determine the effects of solution pH, agitation speed, the adsorbent dosage, and contact time for the removal of sulfate ions from the synthesized contaminated water using the novel PVP-assisted AlNiMn nanocomposite. The results from batch experiments showed that the novel polymer assisted nanocomposite adsorbed over 3000 mg/L sulfate ions from the model wastewater at optimal treatment conditions (of 150 rpm, pH 6, and 60-min contact time). The Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich models were plotted to explain the adsorption isotherm equilibrium. The isotherm models suggest the sulfate adsorption followed the physical sorption mechanism. The experimental results had good fits (R2 ≥ 99.5%) with both pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order. Moreover, the flux and separation tests were conducted to evaluate the permeability performance and separation capacity of the prepared CD-GO-PA-PSF composite membrane for the removal of salts, heavy metals, and organic contaminants. The results show the highest membrane flux of 100 L/m2h at 15 min which later declined and stabilized 40 L/m2h after 4 h. Also, 100% rejection efficiency was attained for the removal of 1000 mg/L, 100 mg/L, and 250 mg/L of salts, heavy metals, and organic contaminants respectively for over 5 h. The novel polymer-supported nanoadsorbent and CD-GO-PA-PSF nanocomposite membrane were proven to have better adsorption capacity for sulfate ions in sulfate-rich wastewaters and the impressive and stable permeability and contaminants separation performance compared to other previously reported studies. Hence, the novel nanoadsorbent can be deployed for the pre-treatment of sulfate-rich wastewater while the CD-GO-PA-PSF nanocomposite is a promising membrane for the filtration and purification of wastewater and seawater.
