English Abstract

One of the key factors that makes an unconventional play successful economically is understanding its geomechanical properties. In this thesis, detailed mechanical characterization is accomplished by employing different methods using core- and log-based data from five wells penetrating Kimmeridgian (late Jurassic) mudrocks in Saudi Arabia. The core-based tests include micro-rebound testing, impulse hammer, ultrasonic wave velocities, and scratch testing in which data acquisition is conducted on ambient conditions. Dynamic mechanical properties were established by logs. Brittleness profiles are established by logs and mineralogy from x-ray diffractometry (XRD). Micro Rebound Testing (MRT) was conducted on a total of 708 ft of core from five wells. Static unconfined compressive strength (UCS), and static Young’s modulus were established based on developed empirical equations by multiple authors. MRT and its derivatives provided high-resolution mechanical profiles across the five studied wells. Impulse hammer and ultrasonic wave velocity tests provided static reduced Young’s modulus, Vp, and Vs wave velocities. These two tests were conducted on 25 slabbed core samples averaging 6 inches in length. Micro x-ray fluorescence (XRF) was conducted on the 25 samples for quantitative elemental evaluations. One foot step-rate hand-held XRF data of all the cores were utilized as well. Scratch testing was conducted on nine of the 25 core samples. Dynamic mechanical properties based on logs were established. These included brittleness, dynamic Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and UCS. Results of micro-rebound testing provided continuous high-resolution mechanical characterization. Such resolution was not possible with log-based mechanical property analyses because they are established using sonic log data, which has a vertical resolution of 3 to 4 feet. Therefore, ductile and brittle zones were better defined using micro-rebound testing. UCS values obtained from scratch testing agree with hardness-based UCS. Both hardness and mechanical log-based data show inverse relationships with increased Total Organic Component and clay percentage. Data interpretation from ultra-high resolution (inch scale) of hardness, reduced Young’s modulus, Vp, Vs, QEMSCAN, and XRF shows that hardness has a strong positive relationship with reduced Young’s modulus, Vp, and calcite from XRF. Conversely, negative relationships between hardness and Al, Fe, Si, and S are documented.
