Arabic Abstract

PVs.

English Abstract

In recent years, the dramatic decline in the price of photovoltaic (PV) and the need for clean form energy globally have paved way for the increase in the installation of solar PVs. This high solar PV penetration leads to a phenomenon known as the duck-curve. The duck-curve is the net demand after the installation of PVs. The duck-curve resembles the shape of a duck. The load is very low during the mid-day and ramps up later in the day. The duck-curve has high ramp-up and ramp-down requirement. This poses the challenge of flexibility in the grid. Usually, thermal units are not very flexible and cannot cope with the high ramps of the duck-curve. This thesis proposes a an optimal unit commitment model that involves high flexibility products to address the challenges of the duck-curve. The aim of this thesis is to handle the ramping challenges of the duck curve. An energy management system (EMS) is developed by formulating an optimal dispatch model for the thermal units and flexible ramping products such battery energy storage (BESS). Model predictive control (MPC) is used for the proposed dispatch model. The MPC uses both current information and newly updated forecast information to produce optimal control actions. Thus, the charging and discharging of the BESS are optimally scheduled. PV curtailment and load are also included in the formulation for handling the duck curve fast ramps. PV Curtailment involves regulating the output of the PVs during periods of low demand while load shedding involves cutting off some demands to accommodate a drop in power generation. Furthermore, the flexibility of the proposed model is assessed using period of probability deficit (PFD) index to show the effectiveness of the proposed method in handling the duck curve fast ramps. It is also observed that the proposed model is more economical in terms of operational cost compared o the a non-MPC based mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model. The model is simulated in the GAMS optimizer. The model is tested on a 24-bus IEEE reliability test system (RTS) to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
