English Abstract

Jurassic carbonates are important targets for hydrocarbon reservoirs, source rocks, and unconventional resources in Saudi Arabia. However, carbonate reservoirs are usually complex and heterogeneous, owing to their intrinsic properties and sedimentological variability across different scales. In this study, the distributions of porosity and permeability in several Jurassic formations outcropping in Central Saudi Arabia were explored. Sedimentary lithofacies descriptions, optical petrography, Xray diffractom etry, scanning electron microscopy, porosity and permeability measurements, statistical analyses, DykstraParsons coefficients, and Lorenz coefficients were integrated to characterize different formations. The most common lithofacies included mudstones, wa ckestones, packstones, and grainstones. Locally, sandstone lithofacies were interbedded within the carbonates of the Marrat Formation. Various textural properties were indicative of deposition within a low from muddy highenergy carbonate ramp that ranged to sandy in granularity. The types of porosity varied and included intraparticle, moldic, dissolution, intercrystalline , and fracture. Heterogeneity analyses revealed that the porosity and permeability among the formations was heterogeneous to extremely he terogeneous. The coefficient of variation (CV) for porosity ranged between 0.261 and 0.590, and for permeability, CV = 1.2022.271. The correlation between the porosity and permeability ranged between 0.154 and 0.507, while the DykstraParsons coefficient ranged from 0.6500.990 and the Lorenz coefficients ranged between 0.292 and 0.628. The Reservoir Quality Index was between 0.011 and 1.208. Several main factors appear to have controlled the heterogenous distribution of porosity and permeability in the s tudied Jurassic formations, including their lithofacies, textures, depositional environments, and diagenetic histories. By integrating analyses of formation outcrops with their subsurface equivalents, our understanding of and ability to predict the distrib greatly improved. ution and heterogeneity of porosity and permeability may be xiii
