English Abstract

The Jauf Formation outcrops throughout the northern parts of Saudi Arabia and is found throughout eastern Saudi Arabia in the subsurface. The Jauf Formation is subdivided into five Members: (i) Sha’iba Member, (ii) Qasr Member, (iii) Subbat Member, (iv) Hammamiyat Member, and (v) Murayr Member. In this project, the focus is on the Subbat Member of the Jauf Formation to demonstrate the evolution of the 3rd order Emsian sequence stratigraphic sequence. Based on 240 meters of measured sections across the four different outcrops, and 177 meters of described shallow cores in northern Saudi Arabia, the Subbat Member is subdivided into seven facies associations. The Subbat Member started with a falling stage system tract that witnessed a transition from the offshore carbonates of the Qasr Member into the Offshore Siliciclastics Facies Association of Subbat. This transition was followed by several progradational phases of the Wave Dominated Delta Facies Association and the Shoreface to Offshore Transitional Facies Association. A local lowstand system tract is characterized by the Fluvial Facies Association and the Crevasse Splay Facies Association. The Subbat Member ends with a transgressive system tract that is represented by the Estuarine Channels Facies Association and extends to deposits offshore mud followed by limestones of the Hammamiyat Member. This project suggests a new interpretation for the lower part of the Subbat Member of the Jauf Formation. The new interpretation has greatly impacted the understanding of the depositional environments in northern Saudi Arabia during the Early Devonian. It also proposes an alternative criterion to define the boundary between the Subbat and the Hammamiyat Member using sequence stratigraphy.
