English Abstract

This thesis investigates the outage probability of dual-hop mixed free space optical (FSO) /radio frequency (RF) relaying network that uses multiple relays for sending the source message to the destination. The system model considers a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying scheme with the influence of multiple interferences at the destination node. In this system, we consider a Gamma-Gamma distributed channel model with the effect of pointing error to represent the FSO links at the first hop with both intensity modulation-direct detection (IM-DD) receivers, Input-Independent and cost-dependent IM-DD. The RF links and the interferences are assumed to follow Rayleigh distribution fading model. A closed-form expression is derived for the outage probability, in addition to studying the system performance at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values, where an approximate asymptotic expression for the outage probability is derived. Also, the diversity order and coding gain of the system are obtained and analyzed in this region. Power allocation for the source and relay powers is performed to optimize the outage probability performance. The exact and asymptotic results are validated using Monte-Carlo simulation. The results mainly show that in weak atmospheric turbulences, the RF links dominate the system performance and this leads to a diversity order that equals the number of relays (K), while under severe conditions, the diversity order is a multiplication of K and the minimum of the FSO fading and pointing errors parameters. Additionally, we investigate the outage probability of dual-hop Multiuser mixed FSO/RF relaying network that uses underlay secondary user as a relay for sending the source message to the destination. The system model considers a DF relaying scheme with two constraints on the cognitive scenario. In this scheme, we consider a Gamma-Gamma distributed channel model with the effect of pointing error to represent the FSO link at the first hop with both IM-DD receivers, Input-Independent and cost-dependent IM-DD. The RF link and the cognitive interference channel are assumed to follow Rayleigh distribution fading model. A closed-form expression is derived for the outage probability, in addition to studying the system performance at high SNR values, where an approximate asymptotic expression for the outage probability is derived. Also, the diversity order and coding gain of the system are obtained and analyzed in this region. The results mainly show that in weak atmospheric turbulences, the RF link dominate the system performance.
