English Abstract

The conventional velocity model building procedures used for pre-stack depth migration rely on acquiring flat gathers in images and is commonly constrained by depth information from wells in order to assess the quality of the velocity model. In general, this procedure is adequate and considered reliable for the sedimentary section. However, imaging the basement is more challenging. Unlike the sedimentary section, and for practical and economic reasons, accurate basement imaging suffers from a lack of actual well penetration and is commonly characterized by image uncertainty and the appearance of intense deformations that are related to challenging wave propagation, ray path distortion, and poor angular illumination resulting from complex overburden structures. In this thesis, the integration of information concerning basement depth produced by magnetic data with seismic data is investigated in order to provide additional quality control for the process of building seismic velocity models; the proposed workflow will positively influence the production of focused and correctly positioned images of the basement that lies beneath geo-bodies (over-pressured shale or salt bodies). The proposed workflow offers a qualitative means of improving the accuracy of the velocity model by providing depth to basement estimates from magnetic data that can function as correlating information to complement the image gather flatness. (The best velocity will produce a flat image gather and a focused stack image of the base salt and the basement horizon using this methodology). The workflow will quantitatively guide velocity model building by minimizing the uncertainty associated with depth-to-basement determination. (The basement depth falls within the depth range obtained using the magnetic method within a 5% error range at a given depth) In this study, 2D synthetic datasets generated by Amerada HESS (SEG public domain) will be used to assess the stability and potentiality of the proposed workflow in order to overcome the challenge of imaging the basement lying beneath salt-bodies. The presence of salt structures that penetrate the sedimentary section on top of a variable basement depth leads to the production of a diversity of imaging challenges that are sufficient to validate the proposed methodology. However, the published dataset does not include magnetic data. Therefore, a magnetic data equivalent for the HESS model will be generated to estimate basement depth using recognized methods such as the Werner method and Spectral analysis.
