English Abstract

Hybridization of concentrator photovoltaic and thermoelectric generator (CPV-TEG) offers an effective means of utilizing and reducing the cost of solar energy. The energy, exergy and exergo-economic assessment of a CPV-TEG system is examined in this study. The CPV-TEG system performance is determined based on the first and the second law of thermodynamics and specific exergy costing (SPECO) is employed to study the cost effectiveness. In addition, A performance measure known as the overall performance index (OPI) is introduced to evaluate the optimum design of the CPV-TEG system operating within limit of cell temperature. The OPI accounts for four performance indicators of the CPV-TEG system namely: energy efficiency, exergy efficiency, cost of solar receiver (COSR) and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). The influence of key parameters (such as direct normal radiation (DNI), geometric concentration, thermoelectric figure of merit, temperature ratio of thermoelectric junction and heat sink thermal resistance) and their significance on the performance and cost of the system is examined. From an exergoeconomic standpoint, the CPV-TEG is more cost effective based on overall system cost as compared to the CPV system only. However, the unit cost of electricity of the stand-alone CPV is lower as compared to the coupled CPV-TEG system. Furthermore, the low value of the exergo-economic factor F for the system indicated that the associated cost is mostlyxvii due to irreversibility in the system. A case of performance enhancement is considered such that energy and exergy efficiency is prioritized. The optimization is considered for a watercooled CPV-TEG design operating within maximum allowable cell temperature of 110 oC. A 1.56% increase in OPI is obtained for the CPV-TEG design as compared to the stand alone CPV system.
