English Abstract

Wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) are perceived as the ultimate form of next-generation passive optical networks (NG-PONs) that show promising outlooks in meeting the ever-growing demand of telecommunication capacities and internet traffic. In this dissertation, an InAs/InP quantum dash laser is investigated as an ideal contender to satisfy various requirements of (NG-PONs), owing to is broadband emission in the L-band region, which allows for expanding the utilizable bandwidth away from the over-exhausted C-band in addition to accommodating more network subscribers for less capital expenditure. This study is carried out in two levels: device-level and system-level. The device level investigation aims to explore different mechanisms and phenomena of the quantum dash laser to validate its potential as a viable platform at different points and elements of the WDM-PON. Firstly, the device is inspected as a tunable light source showing a total emission-wavelength tuning range of ~30 nm exceeding any other reported source in the L-band thanks to its inhomogeneous active region. Thereafter, the quantum dash laser is investigated in a two-sectioned configuration to realize other monolithic devices, viz., a laser with an integrated semiconductor optical amplifier, and with an integrated semiconductor spectrum shaper. The former device showed an amplification gain of ~8.5 dB while the latter demonstrated enhancement in the spectrum top-profile with a three-fold broadening in its bandwidth. Thereafter, the active region of the quantum dash structure is examined in terms of its electro-absorption (EA) and electro-optic (EO) characteristics for potential realization of EA- and EO-modulators in WDM-PONs. This device-level investigation demonstrates the bright prospects of the mass-deployment of the quantum dash structure as a unified monolithic tunable-laser with integrated optical-amplifier, spectrum-shaper, and EA/EO-modulator. On another front, at the system level, the quantum dash laser is employed to achieve the first demonstration of WDM transmission in the L-band over a single transmitter with an aggregate data rate of 384 Gbit/s with three simultaneous channels in dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying modulation scheme with the aid of optical injection-locking to enhance the linewidth and noise characteristics of the highly inhomogeneous quantum dash laser.
