English Abstract

The impact of integrating nanofluid optical filtration (OF) and nano-enhanced phase change materials (nanoPCMs) to the conventional hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) system is evaluated experimentally and numerically. Different nanomaterials are applied to the pure water and paraffin wax (PW) PCM. The new samples from the OF nanofluid and nanoPCM are prepared and subjected to different experimental measurements of the optical and thermal properties, stability and scanning microscopy. Using validated numerical models, the consequences of the new properties on the thermal and electrical performance of the new hybrid system are evaluated. For the OF measurements, three nanomaterials are used; silver, reduced graphene oxide (decorated with silver) and MXene. The results reveal dependence for the transmittance of the OF on all the studied parameters. The transmittance is higher at shorter path lengths and lower nanoparticles loadings. The effect is most pronounced in the spectral range of 300–1350 nm. In addition, the highest transmittance is achieved using the Ag, while it was the lowest using rGO-Ag. Using the SDBS (Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate) as surfactant results in higher transmittance and more stability. The OF with Ag and rGO-Ag present the highest stability, while the OF with MXene shows the lowest stability. Integrating the OF to the hybrid PV/T system results in electrical and thermal energies with efficiencies of 9.6% and 66.9% respectively, in comparison to 5.6% electrical efficiency for the standalone PV system. The performance was not satisfactory at 15˚C atmospheric temperature and normal solar concentration. For the nanoPCM measurements, two nanomaterials are used, the multi-walled carbon nanotube and the graphene nanoplatelets. PW/MWCNT and PW/GNP show an enhancement in the thermal conductivity by 13.9 % and 3.8 % respectively at 25 ˚C and 5 wt% during the melting process. Most of the PW/MWCNT samples show greater enhancement to the thermal conductivity, while, PW/GNP show higher values for the specific heat storage capacity. In addition, using GNP is found as enhancing the performance of the hybrid PV/T/nanoPCM system at any nanoparticle loading, while the MWCNT is only effective at high loadings. Assessing the performance and thermal regulation of the hybrid PV/T/nanoPCM system, using PW/GNP, it is revealed that the PV/T/nanoPCM system, with nanoparticles, is better compared to standalone PV system and shows better cooling for the panel. Using the PV/T/nanoPCM is more effective in summer more than winter nanoparticles showing higher electrical efficiency (6.9 %and 22%, respectively) compared to the standalone PV system. Existence of a PCM layer between the PV and the cooling channel enhances the thermal regulation along the panel, but increase the temperature level at the same time. The addition of nanoparticles (MWCNT, GNP, Cupper or Diamond) is more effective at higher solar concentrations and MWCNT is the best nanomaterial. CaCl2.6H2O when used as PCM, provides better performance and relatively lower temperature levels, while RT35 provides better thermal regulation of the PV panel, but at relatively higher temperature levels. For hybrid integrations, the nanofluid OF and the nanoPCM have proven their promising results at high atmospheric temperatures and solar concentrations. Compared to standalone PV system and at normal solar concentration, an enhancement of 9% and 7.1% in the electrical efficiency can be achieved by integrating the OF or the OF and the nanoPCM, respectively, to the traditional PV/T system. At high solar concentrations, the enhancement can reach 122.5% and 98.5%, respectively, with higher thermal efficiency achieved by the last system. This research with OF and NanoPCM and its integration with the hybrid PV/T system is expected to lead to many future researches for more optimization of the OF and nanoPCM which will end up with excellent solar energy harvesting.
