English Abstract

Geostatistics, as a valuable complement to the traditional geological tools, offers useful techniques for evaluating the spatial characteristics of reservoir rock properties. Geostatistical techniques have been employed in this study to estimate and to simulate porosity values within the Jurassic Arab-D reservoir rocks in the Harmaliyah Oil Field located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The main objective of this study was to construct geostatistical models based on the spatial continuity of porosity within the Arab-D reservoir. The study was based on the well-log derived porosity values from 44 vertical wells in the Harmaliyah Oil Field. A complete statistical and spatial analyses were conducted on the well-log porosity values from these wells leading to variogram models used in subsequent estimation and simulation. 3D reservoir models of well-log porosity were constructed using ordinary kriging and Gaussian sequential simulation techniques. Although kriging and simulation models are consistent with each other, kriging resulted in smoother distribution of porosity values and simulation appears to have reproduced actual heterogeneity in the distribution of porosity within the reservoir. Comparison of the histrograms and the statistical parameters of the input data and the simulated values indicates a very close match in both distributions and parameters.
