English Abstract

The goal of this work is to enable seismic data interpretation for the volumetric rock properties, such as porosity, mineralogy, and hydrocarbon saturation. This goal can be achieved by applying a theoretical rock physics transform between the elastic and volumetric rock properties to volumes of seismically derived impedances and density. Such a transform is called a rock physics model (RPM). Our approach is to establish an RPM using wireline data where the elastic and volumetric rock properties are simultaneously measured in a well. The methodology of establishing an RPM is called rock physics diagnostics (RPD). In this work, I use 8 wireline datasets from a clastic Saudi field bearing gas and oil. The rock is low-to-medium porosity sandstone. By cross-plotting the velocity versus porosity and color-coding the data by the clay content, we establish that the ensuing velocity-porosity trends are practically the same as in a classic laboratory dataset. These data are best fit and explained by the stiff-sand theoretical model and Raymer’s model, both relevant to fast and stiff clastic rock. I select the former model as it is more rigorous and allows for more parameter adjustment as compared to the latter. This RPM can be potentially used in an interpretation of seismically derived impedance volumes for porosity and mineralogy. I show this by applying an upscaling approach to the data showing that the RPM thus selected is still valid at the seismic scale. This is the first such study applied to a Saudi clastic reservoir.
