English Abstract

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have proven their utility and adaptability across a diverse range of applications and industries. UAVs have also replaced helicopters and manned aircraft in some applications and at a lower operational cost. Multi-rotor UAVs have been used for load transportation successfully in recent years, especially for delivering product packages, medicine and other supplies to remote areas or inaccessible regions. This thesis is inspired by the aspiration to facilitate multi-purpose quadrotors to transport fragile load. This is markedly useful for delivering packages and important goods to remote areas or inaccessible regions using off-the-shelve drones. This study contributes to the ongoing research literature related to load-carrying drones. In this work, a PID and a Nonlinear Backstepping controller are developed and implemented on a quadrotor slung-load system. These controllers stabilize the quadrotor and damps the load oscillations, and the effectiveness of each controller is analyzed and compared with the other controller. It is important to limit the load dangle since it is dangerous for the quadrotor, the surroundings and the integrity of the load itself. A nonlinear model of the quadrotor slung-load system was developed using the Lagrangian approach. The developed controllers were then applied to this nonlinear model and the simulations were carried out in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The obtained results showcased the effectiveness of the controllers in achieving the desired goal vis-a-vis the stable motion of the quadrotor and minimized load swing. Both controllers achieved these goals. Furthermore, the Backstepping controller turned out to be more effective for controlling the translational channels and the heading angle, whereas the PID controller was very effective in controlling the roll and pitch channels. With regards to the load swing, both controllers fared similarly; with the PID being marginally better in controlling the load rock while the Backstepping was slightly better in restraining the load sway. It can be concluded from the observations that the PID controller performed better on some fronts while the backstepping controller was better for others.
