English Abstract

The Jafurah sub-basin in eastern Saudi Arabia is among the most important unconventional petroleum prospects in the Kingdom. Five wells from a relatively unknown and minimally studied late Jurassic (early Kimmeridgian) source-rock interval in this basin were investigated for their petroleum generation potential, kerogen type, origin, environment of deposition, and thermal maturity. More than 150 samples were analyzed to estimate organic richness and generation potential using RockEval pyrolysis. A subset of these samples identified as more organic rich were further subjected to bitumen extraction, gas chromatography, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Results of this investigation revealed significant organic richness in at least two lithofacies having very good to excellent hydrocarbon generation potential, while other lithofacies also showed promising results. Present day hydrogen index values suggested a mixed type II/III kerogen, whereas n-alkane isoprenoids and molecular biomarker analyses indicated a Type II kerogen with little to no sulfur. Organic matter present in these lithofacies corresponds to a mixed planktonic-bacterial origin deposited under anoxic to suboxic marine conditions. Thermal maturity estimates from pyrolysis Tmax and maturity related saturated and aromatic biomarker ratios suggested a medium to high maturity source rock, analogous to the mature oil and wet-gas window. The outcomes of this research will help in assessing resource potential regarding the source-rock interval in the Jafurah sub-basin.
