English Abstract

Adhesive-bonded joints, during their service life, are frequently subjected to complex cyclic loading resulting in fatigue failures. Hence, there is a necessity to develop a reliable methodology to investigate the fatigue damage in adhesive-bonded joints of composite materials. An important factor which is often deliberated to increase the strength and service life of adhesive-bonded joints in composite materials is the surface pretreatment of the substrates. Surface pretreatment prevents surface contamination and improves the mechanical interlocking of the adherend surfaces. Experimental investigations have indicated the inefficacy of traditional surface treatments due to their labor intensity, non-uniformity and surface contamination. The aim of this research is to examine the fatigue behavior of adhesive-bonded composite joints with a unique surface pretreatment (laser treatment). The fatigue crack growth (FCG) testing was executed under a constant amplitude loading condition and the crack propagation along the length of the specimens was characterized using the Paris-law relation. The experimental investigations were then used to deduce if the pretreatment method used, and other loading parameters significantly affect the fatigue damage. The results indicated that the laser-treated samples generally have a higher tearing energy or maximum strain energy release rate compared to the other traditional surface pretreatments considered. Furthermore, the samples pretreated with 30% of the maximum CO2 laser power (LA) have about 60% higher resistance to crack growth compared to the samples pretreated with 10% of the maximum CO2 laser power (LC).
