English Abstract

In this work, molybdenum (Mo) based catalysts with different types of nanocomposite supports were synthesized and characterized. The prepared materials were evaluated for their catalytic performance in reactions including liquid fuels desulfurization. The sulfur-containing compounds such as crude petroleum products are necessary to be desulfurized to prevent poisoning of catalysts, environmental pollution and corrode refining equipment so desulfurization is an important step in the refining process. Alternative materials were synthesized to act effectively as catalysts. These materials were compared with the existing ones that have been reported as an excellent alternative for fuel desulfurization. In this work, different synthetic routes were implemented for enhancing the efficiency of Mo-based catalysts used for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of liquid fuels. The use of carbon nanofiber introduced unique properties such as mechanical, electrical or chemical that was greatly improve the performance of the catalyst. Also, it introduces the large surface area that is considered as a specific property of carbon as a support. This surface area enhanced the active phase distribution on the support surface and improved the activity of HDS catalyst. Introduction of titanium oxide with different ratio has an important role for enhancing the dispersion of the active phase, increase acidity and improved sulfurability. Presence of two oxygen atoms with lone pairs of electrons will lead the formation of Vander Waals bonds or electrostatic interaction between Titania and active phase. This interaction was weakened and subsequently low titania loading on the prepared catalyst gave high HDS performance. Graphene was doped into the support structure in which it will improve mechanical and chemical properties. Also, it has a role for increasing the surface area of the active phase that will lead to an improvement in the HDS catalyst. Boron was added with different percent (1 %, 2 % and 5 %) to enhance the catalytic performance of the HDS catalyst through improvement the dispersion of the active phase and promoter on the composite support surface. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) were used for structural characterization. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray mapping and electron dispersive x-ray (EDX) were used for morphological studies of the catalysts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to obtain the chemical states and binding energies values of the catalysts. Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) was used for evaluating or confirming the thermal stability of the catalysts. Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) was used to illustrate the acidic characteristic of the synthesized materials.
