English Abstract

Many laboratory waterflooding experiments have demonstrated that wettability is one of the many factors that can hinder the transport of crude oil through pores to increase recovery. Oil-wet reservoirs have low oil recovery compared to water-wet reservoirs. Carbonate rocks are predominantly oil-wet. In this thesis, experiments were designed and performed using a modified high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system, carbonate powder to represent formation rock surfaces, different surface-active model compounds (SAMC) and different brine formulations (diluted Seawater Middle East [SWME*], NaI, and a mixture of both). The carbonate powder was conditioned with the SAMC. The conditioned carbonate was then flooded with different brines to study the release of SAMC. Spectral analysis showed that NaI released more SAMC compared to the pure SWME* brine or a combination of SWME*+NaI brine. The high recovery of the surface-active material was attributed to the presence of Iodide ions in the brine. The least recovery was observed in SWME* brine. The presence of Mg2+, SO42- and I- ions in the SWME*+NaI brine resulted in competition among the ions which lowered the effect of I- to recover more SAMC. Contact angle experiments confirmed that the native carbonate was water-wet, conditioning in SAMC increased the contact angle to oil-wet, and conditioning with the different brines was able to reduce the contact angle of SAMC-conditioned surfaces from oil-wet back to water-wet. The developed method allows conducting fast and informative waterflooding experiments to screen and select the best aqueous formulation for a carbonate reservoir to enhance oil recovery. The method can be further expanded by changing the rock samples to other lithologies such as dolomite, chalk or silica. The modular approach allows also to use a different SAMC to condition the rock powder.
