English Abstract

NAME: Yousef N. Shnaiwer TITLE OF STUDY: Network-Coded Macrocell Ooading for Femtocaching- Assisted Cellular Networks MAJOR FIELD: Electrical Engineering DATE OF DEGREE: October 2019 Femtocaching is a new technique that has been proposed to improve macrocell ooading in future wireless networks. In this work, we investigate the potential of utilizing Instantly Decodable Opportunistic Network Coding (IDONC) to improve the macrocell ooading capabilities of femtocaches (FCs). This work is divided into three main parts. The rst part introduces the basic macrocell ooading problem, which can be used as the basic block for any future research in this area. The basic macrocell ooading problem is formulated as an optimization problem over an IDONC graph, and is proved to be NP-hard. Thus, a two-step greedy scheme is proposed to solve the problem by rst choosing the best coded/uncoded le schedule for every FC and then nding the minimum number of required transmissions by the Macrocell Base Station (MBS). Theproposed greedy scheme is shown to be asymptotically optimal and its macrocell ooading performance is analyzed using random graph theory. Simulations are used to compare the derived theory with the performance of the heuristics used to implement the greedy scheme. Simulation results for a small network setting showed that the proposed heuristic can achieve a very close performance to that achieved by the optimal IDONC-Broadcast (IDONC-B) scheme. Furthermore, simulations for a large network setting showed an improvement of 2%-50% in the ooading gain when using the proposed augmented graph for ooading as compared to the benchmark separated graph, depending on the number of clients in the network and the FCs' coverage radius. The second part of this work introduces an interesting application of utilizing femtocaching and IDONC to improve cell ooading, namely, the Fog Radio Access Network (FRAN) architecture. Similar to the rst part, the cloud ooading problem is formulated as an optimization problem over an IDONC graph, its NPhardness is proven, a heuristic solution is proposed to solve the problem, and random graph theory is used to analyze the proposed solution. Simulations for a large network setting showed an improvement of at least 5% in the ooading performance when heterogeneous FRANs as compared to homogeneous FRANs. The third and the last part of this dissertation discusses yet another interesting application of IDONC-assisted femtocaching, namely, rate-aware cloud ooading in FRANs. The cloud ooading problem is formulated as a completion time minimization problem, and is shown to be intractable. Thence, a two-step rate-aware IDONC solution is proposed and is tested using Matlab simulations. Simulations showed that the proposed Improved Schedule-Assign (ISA) scheme with Two- Interferers Channel Assignment (TICA) achieves the best ooading-completion time trade-o when compared to benchmark schemes.
