English Abstract

Obtaining a detailed insight into the mechanism of the protective action of various organic corrosion inhibitors on mild steel has remained an active area of research over the years. Organic corrosion inhibitors are molecules containing heteroatoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus which have high electron density and are capable of forming a protective film on the metal. Despite the general belief that such molecules adsorb on the metal by displacing water molecules on the surface leading to the formation of a compact barrier which in turn reduces corrosion attack on the metal, not much detailed mechanistic study have been reported on how such adsorption takes place and the contribution of substituent groups present in the molecules on their corrosion inhibitive performance. The use of computational chemistry as a tool in this aspect have greatly enhanced the prediction of the inhibition efficiencies of these inhibitors based on their electronic and molecular properties and reactivity indices, which are subsequently corroborated by experimental measurements. In the present study, mechanistic studies on the inhibition of mild steel corrosion by a series of imidazole derivatives starting from simple molecules to bulky ones was conducted. DFT studies, spectroscopic and electrochemical studies were conducted on the molecules and the mechanisms of action of the molecules in the inhibition of mild steel corrosion were investigated
