English Abstract

The growing use of non-linear loads has increased the levels of harmonics in electronic power systems. These non-linear loads include personal computers, laser printers, photocopying machines and distribution transformers. This thesis is composed of two parts; namely experimental survey and simulation results. The objective of the experimental survey is to establish a database for transformer no-load current harmonics and to discuss the practical factors that influence transformer no-load current harmonics. These factors include flux density, core stacking techniques, core material, high voltage level saturation and number of phases. The survey results show that the most important factors that affect transformer no-load current harmonics are the flux density, high voltage level and saturation. The second part of the thesis is modeling transformer no-load current harmonics using EMTP. A single phase transformer was modeled as a non-linear inductor in parallel with a non-linear resistor. Good agreement between experimental and simulation results were achieved. It is also shown that this approach is not applicable for three phase core type transformers.
