English Abstract
Microcomputers have the capacity of providing complex and sophisticated control techniques. One system class requiring such complexity is that controlling vehicular traffic intersections. In this research, a microcomputer algorithm is proposed to control the traffic through an isolated intersection. The operation of the proposed algorithm was simulated by a general purpose computer, under different traffic trends. A simulated pre-timed control of the same intersection was taken as a comparative strategy to assess the one proposed. The geometry and data of a real intersection was chosen to be the test area. Measured intersection data was utilized to provide appropriate inputs to the computer during the different simulation days. A mathematical model is introduced to describe the intersection dynamics. The algorithm considerations were also implemented on a microcomputer and its operation was examined for simulated intersection input data
