English Abstract

I-Q trellis codes have been shown to ensure reliable communication over flat fading Rayleigh channels. However, their performance has not been evaluated for frequency selective fading channels. It is known that good codes over the flat fading channel will also perform well in frequency-selective fading provided the intersymbol interference (ISI) adverse effects have been mitigated. The Thesis, therefore, investigates the performance of I-Q trellis codes with Maximum-Likelihood sequence Equalization or Decision Feedback Equalization in frequency selective fading. The MLSE equalizer is implemented in hard and soft-output modes using the Viterbi algorithm. The tap coefficients of the DFE are updated using the square-root Kalman algorithm which does not suffer error propagation problems. The effect of interleaving is also investigated. Excellent performance of I-Q QPSK scheme has been observed. The I-Q QPSK outperforms the Gray QPSK in independent and finitely inter-leaved fading environments.
