English Abstract

The construction industry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, like that in any other country, faces the serious challenge of improving its performance. Quality of design and construciton are primary objectives in the construction industry. What are the Quality Management (QM) activities in the design and construction phases? The main objective of this study is to determine QM activities used in the design and construction phases of constructed projects in Saudi Arabia. Questionnaires were mailed to consulting offices and contractors. Their responses were analyzed and ranking of QM activites, frequencies, step-wise regression, and Regression Analysis were presented. The results show that QM activities such as drawing checks and provision of clear, concise and uniform plans and specifications are the most important for consulting offices, while education of employees is the least important. Subcontractor evaluation and lab tests of materials are the most important for contractors, while education of employees is the least important. It is recommended that consulting offices and contractors consider the quality management activities to assure quality in the constructed projects.
