English Abstract

The primary goal of the distribution companies is to deliver quality and reliable power supply to their customers. Any interruption in distribution grids causes’ customer minute loss and most of them occur due to the faults existing for longer periods. Therefore, there is a growing research interest to diagnose distribution grid faults efficiently to reduce outage duration and revenue losses by expediting the restoration process. Unfortunately, the integration of renewable energy resources and their associated uncertainties along with the inherent properties of the distribution grids make their fault diagnosis complicated. However, the recent proliferation of phasor measurement units (PMU) to the electricity grids makes the fault diagnosis easier in addition to their grid observability purpose as they provide reliable and accurate data. The main objective of this dissertation is to develop a versatile intelligent fault diagnosis (IFD) scheme for distribution grids considering the integration of renewable energy resources along with their associated uncertainties. This research starts with proposing a novel optimal PMU placement (OPP) formulation to ensure distribution grid observability under various contingency cases of the electricity grids and channel limitation of the available PMU. With a view to developing the IFD scheme, this dissertation models the distribution feeders incorporating the load demand and renewable energy generation uncertainties. Then, it employs advanced signal processing techniques namely the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and Stockwell transform (ST) to extract useful features from the PMU recorded current signals. The proposed approach fetches the extracted features as inputs to the machine learning tools including the multilayer perceptron neural network, support vector machine, and extreme learning machine to diagnose i.e., to detect, classify, and locate the faults. Besides, this research confirms the efficacy of the proposed IFD scheme and shows its independence on the load demand and renewable energy generation uncertainties, presence of measurement noise, and fault resistance and inception angle. Finally, this research builds a laboratory prototype IFD scheme by integrating the physical PMU with the Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) machine. The presented results validate the effectiveness of the prototype IFD scheme as they show a good agreement with the simulation results.
