Abstract

This chapter discusses manufacturing in the context of a ‘system'. Different classifications of manufacturing systems are presented. Resources and different types of materials, used in manufacturing industry today, are also disussed. Various processes applied to different materials in workshops and factories are dicussed. The chapter also covers several key properties of materials. Overall scope or span of manufacturing activities for a certain product is also discussed. The chapter also converse about the use of computers and information systems in modern industry. Finally, different phases of planning & control activities in manufacturing is talked about.
